Hello and welcome to the first post in our Newbie Trail Guide series! If you’re new to mountain biking and looking for a perfect trail to get started, you’ve come to the right place. We’re excited to share some of the best routes tailored specifically for new riders. Our goal is to make your introduction to mountain biking as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.
In this series, we’ll guide you through newbie-friendly trails, providing you with all the details you need for a successful and fun ride. Today, we’re kicking things off with a fantastic out and back: the Mountain Cove Trail. This trail is ideal for newbies, offering a gentle ride with beautiful scenery and just the right amount of challenge to get you started.
Why Mountain Cove Trail?
Mountain Cove Trail is perfect for your first ride for several reasons:
- Short Distance: At just under a mile long, it’s a manageable distance for beginners.
- Mild Elevation Gain: With only 150 feet of climbing, it’s enough to give you a feel for uphill riding without being overwhelming.
- Easy Navigation: The trail runs parallel to Mountain Cove Road, making it easy to stay on track.
Starting Point: Cottonwood Trailhead
The ride begins at the Cottonwood Trailhead, located in the Military Reserve. From here, we’ll head left as you pass the information sign and follow Mountina Cove trail as it runs parallel to Mountain Cove Road. This makes for an easy-to-follow route with a clear path. As you ride, you’ll pass the Freestone Creek Parking lot. Continue up Mountain Cove until you reach Ridgecrest Trailhead.
Turn Around Point: Ridgecrest Trailhead
Your ride will culminate at the Ridgecrest Trailhead, our turnaround point. This halfway mark is a perfect spot to take a breather, enjoy the surroundings, and prepare for the ride back. One of the great advantages of an out-and-back ride, like this ride, is the familiarity you gain with the trail. As you descend, you’ll be riding back down the same path you climbed, so you already know what to expect. This familiarity helps you anticipate the trail better, making your first descent safer and more enjoyable.
As you embark on your first ride, remember that the goal is to have fun and get comfortable on your bike. Mountain Cove Trail offers a smooth, scenic ride with minimal obstacles, making it an excellent choice for new riders. We hope you’ll experience the thrill of mountain biking while enjoying the beautiful natural setting of the Boise Foothills.
